Speed humps work. They ensure that drivers comply with limits on public roads or within commercial premises, and substantially reduce the chance of accidents. When installing traffic calming systems, which speed humps work best?
Speed ramps on public roads or around work areas have a strong track record for reducing the sort of accidents that endanger lives or damage to vehicles and buildings. Traffic calming measures encourage drivers to stay well within pre-set limits, with a timely and obvious reminder that they need to reduce their pace.
This can be vital near residential areas, parks or schools. Speed ramps are also important for anywhere that commercial fleets or site traffic move around, such as construction, logistics and transport business premises. It’s a great way to meet Health & Safety obligations, protecting pedestrians on site.
How do speed humps work? Vertical road calming measures like ramps are both a physical way to reduce speeds but also a psychological method of promoting safe driving.
So, when you need to specify traffic calming measures, what are the best speed humps?
Designed to be effective but not dangerous
The best speed ramp installations are ones that don’t cause the driver and their vehicle undue stress! After all, if they are too high, wide or generally unforgiving, they become a danger in themselves.
These important traffic control options need to do their job – encouraging careful driving – with their design adjusted to the optimal dimensions.
This applies equally to commercial sites that have a fleet of vehicles, busy car parks or public roads shared by pedestrians, cars, trucks, buses and motorbikes. However, bringing commercial vehicles down to a safe speed requires more substantial and robust road ramps. More on this later in this article.
Built to last
Safe Industrial speed ramp kits are specially formulated from a shock-absorbing material, which is compressed and moulded to exacting standards in the UK. This makes it an ideal match for British car parks and roads. The kits can also be delivered swiftly.
Our manufacturing protocols mean that you have traffic calming measures that stand the test of time and use by heavy traffic. Avoiding the nuisance and cost of speed bumps that need to be replaced regularly, as they erode quickly and become ineffectual.
What size of speed ramp?
Safe Industrial’s experts have developed two main categories of speed humps, to suit different traffic situations.
If you are specifying for new or existing public roads and general traffic, 50mm speed ramp domestic kits are recommended for traffic control.
For more resilience and a greater height factor – if you need speed humps for industrial premises, construction sites or premises used by trucks and lorries – it’s recommended that you buy the 75mm high commercial ramp kits.
It is possible to buy speed humps that are 100mm in height, however, they need to be used with caution. They are considered hazardous to some vehicles and can become so unpleasant that drivers divert to other routes, potentially causing a separate set of issues!
Speed hump ease of installation
One of the things to look for when specifying traffic calming measures is the way to fit speed humps effectively.
The Safe Industrial kits are ramp structures suitable for tarmac or concrete. You can specify these in a variety of lengths too, to ensure that your speed breaking system extends across the desired area. Our standard sized speed ramps for commercial or domestic applications are 3000mm, 4000mm, 5000mm and 6000mm. Though we can offer bespoke speed ramp kits too.
Keep in mind that buying good quality speed hump kits can ensure that you have factored in noise and vibration issues. It can be a particular problem in residential areas if you choose a product that is unpleasant to be around!
Speed ramp visibility
Traffic safety and management products need to be seen, to work well. The reason Safe Industrial speed hump kits are yellow and black is obvious – to make your traffic calming measures obvious!
All our products for speed breaking come with diamond grade reflectors too, which substantially improves their night-time visibility.
